It is National Dog Day and since we are in the spirit of making, cooking, and creating at home these Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog treats are easy to make and will help with passing some time.
In the before times, my friends and I would look forward to celebrating little life moments. Completed a project, booked a trip, it’s National this day! Well with all that is happening it is not the easiest of times to be doing or going as we have done in the past.
Which brings me to this trip down Memory Lane to celebrate one of the great things, my dog, Penelope.
Our dogs have been relishing in the time we have been home being quarantined. Repeated extra walks, hanging with our peeps at home and being HOME.
It has been a stress relief to have Pen by my side to answer emails and watching all the updates. She is like: “Wow” and “You’re still here” and yes, I speak for my dog. Ha!
“Pen, do you want to watch new episodes of Unsolved Mysteries and then go for a walk while I am freaked out the entire time??” “Sure!”
Since some of us have been on a baking streak for banana bread, sourdough bread and cookies I figured why not make some treats for our furry loved ones? They will be the best taste testers to tell if we made the cut or not.
A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS/NOTES ABOUT THIS HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER PUMPKIN DOG TREATS RECIPE
*Please make sure that your PEANUT BUTTER does NOT contain XYLITOL. It is an artificial sweetener that is very toxic to dogs.
What if I don’t have pumpkin?
You can substitute the same amount of smashed bananas or cooked sweet potatoes. You can also add some chopped bacon bits as well.
What if I don’t want to use eggs?
You can substitute 1 tablespoon of flax with 3 tablespoons of water for each large egg.
What if I don’t have cookie cutters?
You could use a small glass or shot glass to make circles or cut them into strips or shapes.
What is the shelf life of these Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog treats?
I would keep them in a air tight container for up to a week. If you won’t use them up then I would refrigerate them so they won’t become moldy.
What if I only want to bake a small batch of Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog treats?
I freeze half the dough when I make this recipe as I have a smaller dog who won’t be able to consume that many treats this recipe can yield.
Can I use AP flour?
AP flour is tough on digestion for animals and would only recommend using whole wheat flour.
What if the my dough is too sticky or too dry?
If it’s too sticky add a little bit more of the whole wheat flour. If it is too dry, add a little bit of water.
